Information & eGovernment Authority (iGA) Chief Executive, Mohammed Ali Al Qaed chaired the 13th meeting of the Permanent Committee for Statistical Work, being held on 10th – 11th December 2025 in Riyadh. The meeting is organized by of the GCC Statistical Center’s (GCC-Stat) and the Saudia Arabia’s General Authority for Statistics (GASTAT). In attendance were iGA Deputy Chief Executive of Statistics and Population Registry, Duaa Sultan, and representatives of national statistical offices from the member states.
The committee meeting covered several key items on the committee’s agenda, including joint achievements completed by the end of 2025, the adoption of the joint GCC Statistical Work Strategy (2026 to 2030), and an initiative to develop a unified data, statistics management and governance framework across the GCC. Members were also briefed on a detailed initiative document for projects under the strategic plan and discussed the development of an electronic system to follow up the implementation of the GCC Statistical Work Strategy.
Discussions covered preparations for a digital transformation event for GCC statistical offices, a document outlining the celebration of GCC Statistics Day on 24th December each year, and a proposed 2026 technical support plan for national statistical offices, along with other newly added agenda items.
Al Qaed noted that the convening of the 13th meeting reflects the strong commitment shared by all GCC statistical bodies to advance joint statistical cooperation. He emphasized that such cooperation plays a vital role in supporting data-driven decision-making and monitoring the implementation of policies and strategies that drive progress and development across all sectors in the GCC.
On the sidelines of the meeting, and in preparation for Saudi Arabia’s hosting of the Sixth United Nations World Data Forum in 2026, a panel discussion was held with the participation of the United Nations and heads of GCC statistical authorities. The session, titled ‘International Statistical Standards: The Development and Implementation Role of Statistical Offices in the GCC,’ aimed to align international statistical standards with GCC statistical projects and data, and to contribute to a unified database that supports decision-making and aligns with leading global practices.
Al Qaed highlighted the continuous efforts of GCC countries to keep pace with developments in the field of statistics. He noted that the region has built up valuable experience in standard-setting and showcased Bahrain’s example as one of the first countries to conduct surveys based on administrative records. This approach enabled the gathering of accurate and reliable data, and its methodologies and standards were later adopted by international organizations.
Al Qaed also stressed the importance of consolidating the experience of GCC countries in standard development within a clear, coordinated plan that strengthens institutional processes. He emphasized on the need to form expert teams to establish new standards that meet emerging requirements and set priorities for GCC countries.
“Advancing standards requires GCC statistical offices to move from traditional approaches to technology-driven methods, strengthen research capabilities, and launch innovation labs in statistical work,” he said. “These steps are essential for adopting modern tools that ensure access to information and support precise data analysis.” He also emphasized the need for comprehensive development of talent capable of working with advanced technologies, enhancing skills, updating legislation, and adapting job roles in the statistical field to keep pace with rapid global changes.
Al Qaed expressed his appreciation to GCC-Stat and GASTAT for organizing the meeting and panel discussion, and wished them continued success.
