The meeting was attended by a select group of senior officials from member states' statistical agencies, as well as representatives of international organizations, the Islamic Development Bank (IsDB), the Economic and Social Commission for West Asia (ESCWA), and the United Nations Educational, Scientific, and Cultural Organization (UNESCO). A number of other statistics and digital transformation experts and practitioners discussed topics related to the sector. Most notably, they talked about the OIC Statistical Action Plan 2026-2030, which constitutes the strategic framework for improving joint statistical work over the next five years. A series of technical sessions covered the role of data in the transition to sustainable energy and how to use it to support energy transition policies.
Participating countries reviewed each other’s work in monitoring indicators related to the fourth Sustainable Development Goal (ensuring quality education), including challenges and opportunities. Efforts to leverage digital transformation and advanced technologies to advance the work of statistical agencies were also discussed.
The committee emphasized the role of statistical agencies in supporting development and decision-making, based on the best internationally adopted policies on national studies and surveys. It highlighted their role in leveraging innovation and digital transformation to enhance the quality and efficiency of official statistics, as well as that of statistical work in supporting environmental and sustainable energy policies, enhancing statistics cooperation among Islamic countries, capacity building, and experience sharing.
The recommendations of the previous meeting, held in October 2024, were reviewed, and the program for the 2026–2030 period was discussed and approved. A number of technical topics were also covered.
Ms. Duaa emphasized that participating in the 14th session of the OIC-StatCom reflects the Kingdoms support for specialized international forums and enhancing their contributions to shaping the future of statistics, both regionally and globally. The Kingdom of Bahrain's participation in this international forum embodies its commitment to developing its statistical systems in accordance with the highest international standards.
She stated that the meeting would contribute to enhancing integration in statistical work among member states, particularly in the fields of statistics and digital transformation, adding that this strategic approach is useful, given the accelerating pace of technological innovation globally.
Held under the umbrella of the OIC, the annual Stat-Com meeting aims to establish a platform for exchanging best practices and technical expertise in official statistics, and building partnerships with relevant international organizations. Since the last Stat-Com meeting in October 2024, the Secretariat has conducted 34 statistical activities, including 17 statistical training courses, 16 international meetings/workshops, and one webinar, with approximately 1,300 participants. The Kingdom of Bahrain, represented by iGA and other relevant entities, participated in most of these events.
