Bahrain and Cyprus sign Data Sovereignty initiative to strengthen cooperation in Information & Communication Technology

Attended by His Majesty King Hamad bin Isa Al Khalifa and His Excellency Nikos Christodoulides, President of the Republic of Cyprus, the Kingdom of Bahrain and the Republic of Cyprus signed a Data Sovereignty initiative aimed at strengthening information & communication technology (ICT) cooperation. The Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) was signed by Bahrain’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, His Excellency Dr. Abdullatif bin Rashid Alzayani and Cyprus’ Minister of Foreign Affairs, His Excellency Dr. Constantinos Kombos. Mr Christodoulides is currently on an official visit to the Kingdom.

On this occasion, the Information & eGovernment Authority (iGA) Chief Executive, Mohammed Ali Al Qaed said that the MoU represents an important milestone in strengthening the framework for cooperation and the exchange of expertise in the fields of innovation and digital transformation. Under the agreement, the Republic of Cyprus is granted data sovereignty rights over its subscribers’ data hosted in cloud computing centers located in the Kingdom of Bahrain, in accordance with Decree Law No. 56 of 2018 concerning the provision of cloud computing services to foreign parties. 

 Al Qaed affirmed that the signing reflects the Kingdom of Bahrain’s commitment to building strategic partnerships that support digital transformation and enhance technological integration between countries, contributing to greater stability and prosperity in the digital economy.

He added that enhanced cooperation between the Kingdom of Bahrain and the Republic of Cyprus forms part of the Kingdom’s broader approach to strengthening regional and international cooperation and developing advanced digital infrastructure in line with global best practices. (iGA) Chief Executive, Mohammed Al Qaed highlighted also that this collaboration opens new opportunities for knowledge exchange and the development of joint projects in digital transformation, computing, and data, helping to improve the quality of government services, enhance beneficiary experience, and strengthen investment opportunities in the technology sector for the benefit of both nations.
